It was founded in 1147 as a Cistercian monastery, I remember an 800 year anniversary in 1947 while a schoolboy.After the Reformation and Henry Vlll's break with Rome, and the Dissolution of the monasteries in 1536, the ruin was acquired by the Mansel family, [sympathetic to the King] together with its extensive lands.. It was partially restored ml 542 for services to be held so that Mansel could receive tithes [local taxes] and it has continued to be maintained to this day as an important parish church known as Margam Abbey.
